Dr Vincent (Ben Bocchicchio) has been a leader in the fields of Health and Fitness for nearly 50 years! In 1974, he created and brought slow resistance training to the exercise world. The “Spin-offs” of his system include: Super Slow, Slow Burn, the Perfect workout and a host of other slow resistance programs. He also prescribed low carbohydrate eating and was trained in Therapeutic Fasting in the 1970’s. Some folks describe him as the “Godfather of Modern Fitness and Diet.”
Dr Ben holds Doctoral degrees in Exercise and Health but considers himself a teacher and clinician and prides himself in working on programs and protocols that solve the most prevalent health and wellness concerns. In his best -selling book, “15 Minutes to Fitness” he explains the importance of the combination of diet and exercise in the quest for optimal health, performance, vitality and appearance.
As a double PhD…Dr Ben (Exercise Physiology and Health). Has contributed more than 200 articles, papers and studies to the Fitness and Health fields. He has been a principal investigator and co-investigator on IRB studies with major universities and a consultant to scores of schools, teams, corporations and medical practices regarding exercise, wellness and health.
Dr. Ben introduced and described Slow training to Arthur Jones, Ell Darden and Ken Hutchins while they were at Nautilus. He also taught many of the Nautilus practitioners who became founders of the Historic Nautilus movement in the 1970’s and 80’s. He was also the pioneer who first applied resistance training to clinical phase two cardiac rehabilitation. It was novel in 1984 but is now accepted medical protocol.
When asked to explain why many people using and teaching his slow training methods don’t even know of his foundational role, Dr Ben replies: “I was a “lone wolf” when I started the movement. Quite frankly, I was not impressed with the exercise science or any practitioners or “experts” for many years. I was content studying the science on my own and developing my applications in my own facilities while making a lot of money doing it”
“Someone sent me some material developed by Doug McGuff around 2010 and I thought that finally someone knew what they were talking about. I didn’t agree with the application of some of the tenets of high intensity exercise BUT I completely agreed with his understanding of the relevant metabolic consequences and pathways involved.”
“I have always done extensive consulting and teaching on a private basis to the health, performance and popularist bases but recently have become overwhelmed with requests for information, presentations, formal consulting contracts etc. I try to be selective and honest with my choices of projects, hoping that my input will have a good chance of representing the power of exercise and diet in managing human health and function positively.”
He has presented and constructed published clinical trials utilizing his SMaRT training protocol including a collaboration with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine with juvenile arthritis patients. He is one of the elite exercise experts accepted by TASA (Technical Adviser Services) as a legal expert in the field.
From hardware configurations to specific exercise protocol applications, Dr. Ben has provided valuable insight and direction to many of the leading entities and individuals in the field for nearly 50 years. Now, in his 70’s Dr. Ben continues to be a most sought- after speaker, teacher and cohort in a large number of cutting edge exercise and health enterprises.
Everyone knows that diet and exercise are essential for any aspirations for a high quality, healthy life but few understand which specific applications and combinations of these two are the most consistently powerful and effective. Dr. Ben has probably provided that solution to tens of thousands of people more successfully than anyone for nearly 50 years!
The National Fitness Hall of Fame Induction of Dr. Patricia Bragg, ND, PhD
March 14, 2020
Wow, what a day! What an historic day in beautiful Goleta, California as a rare rain gave rise to an explosion of floral colors on a very special Spring day. Family and friends gathered to together to celebrate with Patricia Bragg as she was honored with the health and fitness industry’s top recognition, induction into the National Fitness Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame’s Founder, John Figarelli opened the ceremony as both he and Lesley Tippett (Bragg Foundation Director) gave inspiring introductions.
They were followed by Goleta's Mayor Pro Tempore, Kyle Richards as he stepped up to the podium and read an eloquently composed proclamation by Mayor Paula Perotte and presented it to Patricia.
The microphone was then handed over to the 94 year old “sparkplug,” Elaine LaLanne. The 2017 NFHOF Inductee entertained the crowd with stories fun and frolic of their family’s experiences together that began over 70 years ago. The love and appreciation was palpable throughout the room. Patricia, the “ageless” 90 year old, then gave a rousing acceptance speech that had the crowd cheering and wanting more!
Afterwards everyone in attendance had the opportunity to have their picture taken with both Patricia and Elaine. A special moment for all.
Much thanks to Lesley, Jen Bolton, Sean McCue, Don Figarelli and many others for their assistance in making the event a total success.
